A prospective randomized controlled trial comparing occupational therapy with home-based exercises in conservative treatment of rotator cuff tears

43 patients with rotator cuff tears were randomized to compare the efficacy of home-based exercise therapy against formal occupational therapy, over 2 months. Outcomes measured included Pain intensity (VAS), Constant-Murley score, shoulder ROM, clinical signs of impingement, as well as strength of abduction/adduction and rotation. The evidence presented in this study indicated that home-based therapy performed comparably against occupational therapy. Patients in the home-based therapy group reported superior self-assessed health status compared to occupational therapy patients.
