The effects of a home-based exercise intervention on elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis: a quasi-experimental study

171 elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive home-based exercise therapy alongside health education, or health education only. The primary outcomes of interest were the WOMAC pain and stiffness scores. Secondary outcomes included the five times sit to stand test (FTSST), the timed up and go test, the 6-minute walking test (6MWT), and the arthritis impact measurement scales 2 - short form (AIMS2-SF) body, symptom, emotional, society and total scores. Follow up was performed 12 weeks after the initiation of treatment. The results of the study found all outcomes to be significantly in favour of the exercise group compared to the control group following treatment.
