Efficacy of a Hip Brace for Hip Displacement in Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Sixty-seven children with non-ambulatory cerebral palsy were randomized to receive 12 months of daily hip bracing (n=33) or no treatment (n=34) for the prevention of hip displacement. The primary outcome of interest was the Reimers migration index (MI). Secondary outcomes of interest included health-related quality of life, range of motion, pain scores, and Cobb angle. Outcomes were assessed at 6 and 12 months follow-up. The results found significantly improved hip migration in the bracing group, which was superior to the control group at both 6 and 12 months. No differences in the change in hip range of motion, pain, or Cobb angle were observed between the two groups at both time points. Quality of life scores (total; sub-score for comfort and emotions) were significantly improved and superior in the bracing group vs. the control group at 6 months.
