Thirty-one patients with intertrochanteric hip fractures were randomized to receive either a single screw femoral nail (Gamma3; n=16) or a dual-integrated screw femoral nail (Intertan; n=15). The study assessed hip joint loading and abductor muscle forces during gait using electromyography-informed neuromusculoskeletal modelling. Outcomes were evaluated at six weeks and six months postoperatively. Overall, the results revealed that patients in the Intertan group showed significantly higher hip joint reaction forces and gluteus medius muscle forces at six weeks, along with higher Harris Hip Scores compared to the Gamma group. These differences resolved by six months. The findings suggest that dual-integrated screw nails may facilitate more normal hip biomechanics and improved function early in recovery.
