A Double-Blind, Prospective, Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Highly Cross-Linked and Conventional Polyethylene in Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty

Epub 2008 Jun 10119 hips undergoing total hip arthroplasty were randomized to receive either components made with highly cross-linked polyethylene or conventional polyethylene components. The results from this study indicated that at 6 months and 3 years, there was a significantly reduced wear rate of the highly cross-linked polyethylene components in comparison to the conventional components. Further long term follow-up to assess long-term wear rates is currently conducted for this study.
