The creep and wear of highly cross-linked polyethylene: a three-year randomised, controlled trial using radiostereometric analysis
J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2008 May;90(5):556-61.54 patients scheduled to receive hip replacements were randomized to the type of polyethylene material of acetabular liners with either a highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) or standard ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) been used. Only in the first 6 months the cup penetration was found to be creep-dominated, but after 1 year most penetration was attributed to wear. HXLPE was observed to have a 60% lower wear rate than the UHMWPE; henceforth, the acetabular liner was likely to have a longer life.
