In this systematic review and meta-analysis, 8 prospective randomized clinical trials examining outcomes of metal-on-polyethylene (MOP) total hip arthroplasty (THA) and metal-on-metal (MOM) THA were evaluated. Complications, reoperation rates, and clinical and radiographic outcomes between MOP-THA and MOM-THA were similar, but patients who underwent MOM-THA had higher serum metal ion concentrations.
