OSTEOARTHRITIS
High molecular weight biological fermentation hyaluronan advantageous in knee OA treatment .

A double-blind randomized controlled trial comparing alternate forms of high molecular weight hyaluronan for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee

Osteoarthritis Cartilage.2006..14.154-162.
Contributing Authors

M Kirchner D Marshall

321 patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomised to receive treatment from one of two forms of high molecular weight hyaluronan. The first group received a high molecular weight hyaluronan produced by biological fermentation (Bio-HA), while the second group received an avian-derived hyaluronan that uses cross-linking. The primary outcome was the effectiveness of the hyaluronan intervention. Results indicated that the Bio-HA treatment had an advantageous benefit-risk profile over the CL-HA treatment.
