Prevalence of Heterotopic Ossification Following Total Disc Replacement. A Prospective, Randomized Study of Two Hundred and Seventy-six Patients
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2007 Jan;89(1):82-8.276 patients from a previous prospective, multicentre, randomized study, that compared the use of the CHARITE Artificial Disc with the anterior interbody arthrodesis in spine conditions, were examined to determine the prevalence of heterotopic ossification post-treatment. Plain radiographs were analyzed, looking at multiple time points pre- and postoperatively. The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and visual analog scale (VAS) scores were also examined at a twenty-four month follow-up. Results indicated that heterotopic ossification was infrequent in patients who underwent the CHARITE Artificial Disc surgery.
