Hemoglobin based oxygen carrier-201: A safe and effective way to save packed blood .
HBOC-201 as an Alternative to Blood Transfusion: Efficacy and Safety Evaluation in a Multicenter Phase III Trial in Elective Orthopedic Surgery
J Trauma. 2008 Jun;64(6):1484-97.688 patients, older 18 years, undergoing non-emergency orthopedic surgery were randomized to treatment with hemoglobin based oxygen carrier-201 (HBOC-201) or packed RBC at the first transfusion decision. After 6 weeks, HBOC-201 was found to be a suitable alternative to packed red blood cell transfusion for patients younger than 80 years with moderate clinical need, undergoing elective orthopedic surgery. A comparison of safety between the two treatment arms was unfavorable for the HBOC-201 patients, but this might have been affected by the patient age.
