A comparison of hemiarthroplasty with total hip replacement for displaced intracapsular fracture of the femoral neck: A randomised controlled multicentre trial in patients aged 70 years and over

252 elderly patients in 8 different centers across Netherlands, presenting with displaced intracapsular neck of femur fractures, were randomized to hemiathroplasty or total hip replacement and were followed up for 1 and 5 years. Although many long-term results of hemiarthroplasty and total hip replacement were similar in patients greater than 70 years old and otherwise healthy, hemiarthroplasty had distinct advantages in terms of less operative blood loss, shorter operative time, and lower rates of dislocation.
