Proximal humeral fractures treated with hemiarthroplasty: Does tenodesis of the long head of the biceps improve results?

OE Journal. 2013;1(5):91 Injury. 2013 Apr;44(4):461-4. doi: 10.1016/j.injury.2012.09.012. Epub 2012 Oct 11.45 patients undergoing hemiarthroplasty for fractures of the proximal humerus were randomized to have their long head of the biceps (LHB) left intact (group 1) or to receive tenodesis (group 2). At a mean follow-up of 25.1 (group 1) or 22.6 months (group 2), the Constant score was significantly higher in group 2 than in group 1. There was also a significantly smaller proportion of patients in group 2 who experienced shoulder pain compared to group 1. The two groups did not differ with respect to active anterior elevation of the shoulder.
