A comparison of ACL reconstruction using patellar tendon versus hamstring autograft in female patients: a prospective randomised study

150 female patients scheduled for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction were randomized to undergo surgery using either a hamstring autograft (HS group) or bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft (BPTB group). The purpose of this study was to compare clinical scores, knee laxity, and rate of graft failure over 2 years of follow-up. The results suggested no significant difference between groups in Lysholm score, side-to-side difference in knee laxity, or the rate of re-arthroscopy and graft failure. The BPTB group demonstrated a higher rate of patients experiencing severe anterior knee pain (visual analog scale >3) within the first 6 months, though pain was similar between groups at 2 years.
