Randomized prospective evaluation of adjuvant hyaluronic acid therapy administered after knee arthroscopy

46 patients with symptomatic meniscus tears and early osteoarthritis, undergoing knee arthroscopy were randomized to receive either 3 intra-articular injections of high-molecular weight sodium hyaluronate or no treatment following surgery. The purpose of the study was to determine the safety and efficacy of hyaluronate injections after knee arthroscopy. Results indicated that HA injections resulted in better pain scores at 3 months, increased flexion of the knee at 6 months, and reduced pain on motion at both time points.
