Eleven randomized controlled trials comparing home-based exercise to usual care or other modes of exercise in hip fracture patients after surgery. Outcomes of interest included physical health, fast gait speed, balance, instrumental activities of daily living, activities of daily living, normal gait speed, lower extremity strength, leg strength in the fractured and unfractured leg, and the 6-minute walking test. Results revealed significantly favourable pooled leg strength in both the fractured and unfractured legs, as well as significantly favourable pooled 6-minute walk test results, in the home-based exercise group compared to the usual care group. Results of the remaining pooled outcomes were not significantly different between the two groups.
