Prospective randomised controlled trial of an intramedullary nail versus a sliding hip screw for intertrochanteric fractures of the femur

OE Journal. 2014;2(13):40 Int Orthop. 2014 Jan;38(1):155-61. doi: 10.1007/s00264-013-2196-7.Eighty patients with a 31-A2.2 or A2.3 AO/OTA multifragmentary intertrochanteric fracture were randomized to receive either a Gamma intramedullary nail or an AMBI sliding hip screw. Parker mobility, Barthel Index, and EuroQol-5D quality of life scores were primary outcomes. After 12 months, patients treated with a Gamma nail achieved higher outcome scores compared to AMBI sliding hip screw and with comparable failure rates. Treatment with Gamma nails seem to be more effective in restoring functional state.
