The Impact of Gabapentinoids on Pain-Related Outcomes after Knee and Hip Surgery: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Fifteen studies including 1,320 patients undergoing knee or hip surgery were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, comparing gabapentinoid use (gabapentin or pregabalin) with a placebo. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain intensity at rest and on movement, opioid consumption, postoperative nausea, and postoperative vomiting. Gabapentinoid use was associated with a modest reduction in cumulative pain scores, opioid consumption, and postoperative nausea but was not deemed clinically significant for pain reduction alone. These findings suggest gabapentinoids may help manage postoperative outcomes, though the clinical relevance in pain reduction remains limited.
