The functional and radiographic outcomes following distal radius fracture treatment in a cast for 4 and 6 weeks in the elderly: A randomized trial

The results of this trial showed no differences between the 4-week treatment group and the 6-week group in regard to functional and radiographic outcomes, except for volar tilt which was significantly better in the 6-week treatment group. Therefore, cast immobilization for a period of 4 weeks is sufficient in treating distal radius fractures and restoring mobility and function.

Fifty elderly patients who were treated with cast immobilizers for their distal radial fractures were randomized to either stay in a cast for 4 weeks (n=26) or 6 weeks (n=24). The primary outcomes of this trial were to measure radiologic outcomes such as radial height (mm), volar tilt, union, and radial inclination (°) as well as functional outcomes such as pain and wrist condition. The results of this trial showed significantly favorable volar tilt angle in the 6-week group after 1-year follow-up when compared to the 4-week treatment group. No differences in functional outcomes or remaining radiographic outcomes were observed.
