A randomised controlled trial investigating the effect of foot orthoses for the treatment of chronic nonspecific low back pain.

41 patients between the ages of 18 and 65 years with chronic nonspecific lower back pain (CNSLBP) were included in this participant and assessor blinded study in which patients were randomized to receive either a prefabricated foot orthotic (n=20) or no orthotic (n=21). Both study groups received the same lower back pain educational booklet. The primary outcomes of interest were pain, assessed using the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS), and function, assessed with the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). The secondary outcomes of interest were patient adherence, incidence of adverse events, and the association between level of physical activity and foot posture, and pain and function. All outcomes were measured after 12 weeks of intervention. Study results revealed no significant between-group differences for any outcome post intervention.
