Effects of focal muscle vibration on physical functioning in patients with knee osteoarthritis: a randomized controlled trial

50 patients, aged 60 years or older, with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis were included in this randomized controlled trial. The purpose of the study was to investigate focal muscle vibration therapy compared to sham treatment in terms of reduced pain, stiffness, and functional limitations. Focal muscle vibration applied on the quadriceps muscles provided significant, clinically important improvement in stiffness, pain and functional limitations at both 3 and 6 months after treatment, as compared to sham treatment and baseline scores. Additionally, focal muscle vibration significantly improved physical performance, balance and gait up to 3 months after treatment.
