A Prospective, Randomized, Controlled, Two-Center, International Trial Comparing the Fibular Nail With Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Unstable Ankle Fractures in Younger Patients.
J Orthop Trauma . 2022 Jan 1;36(1):36-42.One hundred and twenty five patients undergoing operative management for unstable ankle fractures were randomized to receive a fibular nail (n=63) or open reduction and internal fixation with a plate construct (n=62). The primary outcome of interest was patient function at 1 year, evalutated with the Olerud and Molander score. Secondary outcomes of interest were adverse events, infection rates and reoperation rates. No differences in Olerud and Molander scores were found at any time point postoperatively. There were no differences in complication or reoperation rates between groups.
