OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2014;2(1):14 BMJ. 2013 Oct 29;347:f623417 randomised control trials of fall prevention exercise interventions, targeting community dwelling adults over the age of 60, and providing quantitative data on fall injuries, serious falls, fall related injuries, or fall induced fractures (Four categories of falls were identified: all injurious falls, falls resulting in medical care, severe injurious falls, and falls resulting in fractures) were pooled to determine if the application of fall prevention exercises in the elderly reduced different types of fall related injuries. The results of the study indicated that exercise programs that are designed to prevent falls in older adults also have an effect on the injuries that are caused by them (even for the most severe types of injuries) and that the introduction of a fall prevention exercise program reduces the rate of falls that lead to medical care.
