Efficacy of extramedullary femoral component alignment guide system for blood saving after total knee arthroplasty
Knee Surg Relat Res. 2012 Jun;24(2):99-103. doi: 10.5792/ksrr.2012.24.2.99. Epub 2012 May 3179 female patients, undergoing unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA), were randomised into two groups, using either an extramedullary (EM) or intramedullary (IM) alignment guide for distal femoral resection during the surgical procedure. Drainage blood volumes and hemoglobin levels, measured 5 days following surgery, indicated that the EM system resulted in less blood loss and EM patients required fewer transfusions.
