Dr. Herrlin discusses exercise therapy as a primary treatment for non-traumatic, degenerative medial meniscal tears

96 patients presenting with a degenerative medial meniscus tear and no or minimal osteoarthritis were randomised to either undergo arthroscopic surgery followed by exercise therapy or to receive the same exercise therapy alone to compare the efficacy of each treatment method. Following assessments over a 5 year period, the results displayed that both groups\' clinical outcomes improved significantly from baseline, but there were no differences between the groups. It should be noted that one third of patients in the exercise group still had symptoms following treatment and underwent arthroscopic surgery.
