Is the Newest Fibrin Sealant an Effective Strategy to Reduce Blood Loss After Total Knee Arthroplasty? A Randomized Controlled Study

J Arthroplasty. 2014 Aug;29(8):1516-20

62 patients scheduled to undergo primary TKA for knee osteoarthritis were randomly allocated to receive a topical application of a novel fibrin sealant (Evicel) or standard treatment (no application of Evicel), with the purpose of examining its ability to limit blood loss and reduce the need for blood transfusions. Results of this trial revealed Evicel does not reduce total blood loss or transfusion rate compared to standard treatment.
