Enhanced recovery after surgery protocols in total knee arthroplasty via midvastus approach: a randomized controlled trial

Sixty nine patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty via the midvastus approach were randomized to undergo the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol (n=35) or the standard postoperative protocol (n=34). The primary outcomes of interest were postoperative rehabilitation milestones, functional outcomes and pain scores. The ERAS group had a shorter hospitalization stay, faster time to walking and straight leg raise. The ERAS group had lower VAS pain scores at 1,2 and 7 days after surgery. The ERAS group also demonstrated significantly better Hospital for Special Surgery, Knee Society Score and range of motion at 1 month postoperatively. At final follow-up no functional differences persisted between groups.
