Forty overweight elderly women with knee osteoarthritis (OA) undergoing unilateral, total knee replacement were randomized to receive standard care (n=20) (i.e., knee OA-related education, pharmacological therapy, and physical therapy) or elastic resistance exercise training (n=20) post-surgery. The primary outcome of interest was skeletal muscle mass, including leg lean mass and arm lean mass which were measured at 4 months post-intervention. Results demonstrated that the change from baseline in leg lean mass at 4 months follow-up was significantly greater in the elastic resistance group vs. the standard care group (p=0.004). However, arm lean mass was not significantly different between the 2 groups (p>0.05).
