The Wear Behavior In Vitamin E Stabilized Highly Cross-Linked Polyethylene. A Prospective Randomized Study With Radio Stereometric Analysis

Contributing Authors

C Vielpeau V Pineau C Creveuil C Lebel

62 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to evaluate the effect of vitamin E dosing of a highly-crosslinked polyethylene liner (vitamin E group) on reducing wear in comparison to a ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene liner not treated with vitamin E (control group). Patients were evaluated based on radiostereometric analysis (RSA) over 3 years. The evidence indicated 60 to 70% less wear in the Vitamin group as compared to that in the conventional group. The steady-state rate of wear from 1 year and onward was noted at 0.02 mm/year for the vitamin E group, significantly lower than 0.06mm/year demonstrated in the control group.
