DHS vs G3-Nail for the treatment of unstable peri-trochanteric fractures. A prospective randomized controlled comparative study of 6 years follow-up
83 unstable peri-trochanteric fractures were randomized to undergo fixation using either the Gamma 3 intramedullary nailing system (Stryker) or dynamic hip screws (DHS). The purpose of this study was to compare these two interventions with respect to long-term safety and functional outcomes up to 6 years post-operation. This study found that the G3 nailing system for unstable peri-trochanteric fractures yielded significantly superior outcomes in the early postoperative period (i.e. time required for full weight bearing, length of hospital stay, and Harris Hip Scores up to 6 months post-operation), when compared to dynamic hip screw fixation. Thereafter, functional outcomes appear to be similar between groups up to 6 years postoperatively.
