Safety and efficacy of vertebroplasty for acute painful osteoporotic fractures (VAPOUR): a multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

120 patients over the age of 60 with an acute vertebral fracture were randomized to undergo either vertebroplasty or a sham procedure designed to simulate vertebroplasty. The purpose of this study was to compare patient-reported pain, disability and quality of life over 14-day and 6-month follow-ups. Results demonstrated significant between-group differences in favour of the vertebroplasty group in the proportion of patients experiencing low pain (below 4 out of 10 on a numeric rating scale), mean pain score over the duration of follow-up, and the mean reduction in disability.
