Outcome of single level disc prolapse treated with transforaminal steroid versus epidural steroid versus caudal steroids

90 patients with lumbar disc prolapse were randomized to either transforaminal, caudal, or interlaminar epidural steroid injection. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the efficacy between the three steroid injection positions when administered under fluoroscopic guidance. Findings indicated statistically significant greater improvement in pain scores and Oswestry Disability Index in the transforaminal group compared to the interlaminar and caudal injection groups. There were no significant differences between the interlaminar and caudal injection groups when considering improvement in pain scores and ODI. .
