Efficacy of radiofrequency in lumbar facet joint pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis of placebo-controlled randomized controlled trials.

Eight randomized controlled trials, including 472 patients with lumbar facet joint pain, were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing radiofrequency (RF) versus placebo. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain relief, functional status, quality of life (QoL), and global perceived effect (GPE), measured at short (<3 months), medium (3-12 months), and long (>12 months) intervals. Pooled results showed significant pain relief and functional improvement for RF compared to placebo in the short, medium, and long term. However, no significant differences were observed for QoL, and mixed results were found for GPE. These findings suggest that RF offers significant pain relief and functional benefits, though effects on QoL and GPE require further study.
