A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial on the Effectiveness and Safety of Pharmacopuncture for Chronic Lower Back Pain.

100 patients with chronic low back pain were randomized to receive either pharmacopuncture (n=50) or physical therapy (n=50). Outcomes of interest included pain on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) or Visual Analog Scale (VAS), function using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), quality of life on the EuroQoL-5D-5L scale, short form-12 physical and mental component scores, Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC), and 50% pain reduction using a Kaplan-Meier survival estimate. Areas under the curve (AUC) were also assessed for all outcomes. The pharmacopuncture group showed superiority over the physical therapy group in pain scores, ODI, RMDQ, EQ-5D-5L, and PGIC scores at most time points.
