Musculoskeletal Care. 2025 01-Mar;():. 10.1002/msc.70059Study Summary
Six randomized controlled trials including 241 patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing hip and knee strengthening (HKS) versus knee strengthening alone (KS). Pooled outcomes of interest included pain scores, functional activity, muscle strength, heterogeneity, and subgroup analyses across follow-up periods. HKS significantly improved pain and functional activity, while no significant difference was observed in muscle strength. These findings suggest that combined HKS provided superior symptom relief and functional improvement compared with KS alone in patients with PFPS.
