Efficacy of Hand Therapy After Volar Locking Plate Fixation of Distal Radius Fracture in Middle-Aged to Elderly Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Fifty-seven middle-aged to elderly women who had undergone volar locking plate fixation for a distal radius fracture were randomized to receive self-exercise rehabilitation with the addition of hand therapy (n=29) or without additional therapy (n=28). The primary outcome of interest was wrist function as measured by the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Score (QuickDASH). Secondary outcomes of interest included patient-rated wrist evaluation (PRWE), range of motion, grip strength, pinch strength, and pain scores. Outcomes were assessed up to 6 months follow up. Results revealed significantly better QuickDASH scores at 6 weeks in the hand therapy group. VAS pain scores in the first 6 weeks, as well as early wrist range of motion, were also better in the hand therapy group.
