Topical use of topical fibrin sealant can reduce the need for transfusion, total blood loss and the volume of drainage in total knee and hip arthroplasty: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 1489 patients

18 randomized controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis investigating the efficacy and safety of fibrin sealant on reducing blood loss in total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty. Control groups consisted of either no fibrin sealant administration or placebo administration. Analyses demonstrated significantly lower incidence of transfusion and significantly lower total blood loss among fibrin sealant groups in both total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty.
