Efficacy of combined static & dynamic orthosis treatment for PIP joint flexion contracture
Treatment of proximal interphalangeal joint flexion contracture: combined static and dynamic orthotic intervention compared with other therapy intervention: a randomized controlled trial
J Hand Surg Am. 2015 May;40(5):951-5.Sixty patients with proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint flexion contracture were included in the study. Patients were randomized to receive treatment with either a combination of static and dynamic orthotic devices, or hand therapy in the effort to assess the effectiveness of the orthotic intervention as a standalone treatment. Outcomes of interest involved extension active range of motion (ROM), and disability, as assessed by the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) score. The trial determined that, while both groups improved in ROM and DASH score, patients who received orthotic treatment displayed a significantly greater improvement in ROM.
