Efficacy and safety of repeated courses of hyaluronic acid injections for knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review
OrthoEvidence Journal (OE Journal) - ACE Report
OE Journal. 2021;9(22):19 Semin Arthritis Rheum. 2018;48(2):168-75What this means for my practice?
This review found that multiple courses of IA-HA injections reduced pain and were safe for the management of knee OA. Future research is needed to confirm these findings as there were multiple methodological limitations within each of the included studies. Future clinical practice guidelines should consider the product characteristics, long-term use and repeated courses of IA-HA treatment for the management of knee OA.
Study Summary
Seven RCTs and 10 cohort studies with intra-articular hyaluronic acid (IA-HA) as the primary treatment option, at least one repeat course of IA-HA and that included knee pain as an outcome were included in this systematic review. The primary outcome was the reduction in knee pain. Secondary outcomes included the number of treatment-related adverse events (AEs) and serious treatment-related adverse events (SESs).
