Use of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Device in Early Osteoarthritis of the Knee

J Knee Surg. 2015 Aug;28(4):321-8

25 patients with early stage osteoarthritis (OA) were randomized to receive either transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy in addition to standard treatment or standard treatment alone. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of TENS therapy on pain reduction, functional improvement, and quality of life when used in conjunction with standard care practices. Results indicated no significant effect on pain, but there were significant improvements in timed up-and-go test, passive extension, hamstring and quadricep strength, lower extremity functional scale as well as physical health section of SF-36 and objective KSS score.
