Effects of the umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Medicine (Baltimore) . 2024 Nov 15;103(46):e40490.Three randomized controlled trials including 101 patients with knee osteoarthritis were analyzed in this systematic review and meta-analysis, comparing intra-articular UC-MSCs injections to conventional treatments such as hyaluronic acid (HA) or normal saline (NS). Pooled outcomes of interest included the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the Knee Lysholm Score (KLS). The analysis demonstrated that UC-MSCs significantly reduced WOMAC scores and improved KLS. Sensitivity analysis confirmed result stability, and no publication bias was detected. The findings suggest that UC-MSCs improve pain and function in KOA patients, though more extensive studies are required to confirm long-term efficacy.
