Comparison of the effects of orthoses on hallux valgus angle and plantar pressure in individuals with hallux valgus.

Thirty patients with mild to moderate hallux valgus were randomized to receive either a toe separator orthosis or a dynamic orthosis. The primary outcome of interest was hallux valgus angle (HVA). Secondary outcomes of interest included plantar pressure (PP) distribution, quality of life (QoL), and orthosis satisfaction. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and after 4 weeks of orthosis use for at least 7 hours per day. Overall, the results of the study revealed no significant changes in HVA in either group. However, the dynamic orthosis group demonstrated improved PP distribution and significant improvements in pain and QoL scores. These findings suggest that dynamic orthoses may be more effective than toe separators for improving functional outcomes and symptom-related QoL in patients with hallux valgus.
