Effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment associated with transcranial direct current stimulation in individuals with chronic low back pain: A double-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trial.

Seventy-two patients with chronic non-specific low back pain were randomized to receive active tDCS + OMT (n=24), sham tDCS + sham OMT (n=24), or sham tDCS + OMT (n=24). The primary outcome of interest was pain intensity measured using the Visual Analogue Scale. Secondary outcomes included disability (Roland-Morris Questionnaire), quality of life (EuroQoL 5-Dimension 3-Level), and adverse events. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, post-treatment (2 weeks), and at 30-day follow-up. Overall, the results of the study revealed that both OMT-containing groups (with or without tDCS) experienced greater reductions in pain and improvements in quality of life compared to placebo; however, the addition of tDCS did not provide added benefit over OMT alone. These findings suggest that OMT is effective for chronic low back pain, but combining it with tDCS offers no additional clinical advantage.
