Effects of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisation in patients with chronic mechanical low back pain----A randomized control trial.

Fifty patients with chronic mechanical low back pain were randomized to receive either manual myofascial release (n=25) or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation using a long bar tool (n=25). The primary outcome of interest was pain intensity. Secondary outcomes included lumbar range of motion (ROM) in flexion and extension, and lumbar disability assessed using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Outcomes were assessed at baseline and after 3 weeks (9 sessions). Overall, the results of the study revealed significant improvements in pain, ROM, and disability within both groups, but no significant differences between the two groups, except for a post-treatment ODI score. These findings suggest both techniques are equally effective in improving symptoms of chronic mechanical low back pain.
