Within a religious cult setting, ayahuasca brew significantly attenuated hopelessness and panic-like parameters but did not affect state- or trait-anxiety. Given the subjects were all long-term cult members, they may have begun this study with low anxiety levels. Future studies should consider the importance of other variables such as set and setting and the purity of ayahuasca. The results are limited by the small sample size.
Study Summary
Nine healthy subjects from the Santo Daime cult community underwent a double-blind, placebo-controlled study to investigate the effects of ayahuasca on psychometric measures of anxiety, panic-like symptoms and hopelessness. Questionnaires that were used measured state-anxiety (STAI-state), trait-anxiety (STAI-trait), panic-like (ASI-R) and hopelessness (BHS). Under the influence of ayahuasca, scales for panic and hopelessness related states were scored lower while state- and trait- anxiety was unaffected.
