Effects of an Interactive Computer Game Exercise Regimen on Balance Impairment in Frail Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Phys Ther; 2011; 91(10):1449-146230 community-dwelling and ambulatory older adults attending a day hospital for the treatment of balance and mobility limitations were randomized to receive either a typical rehabilitation program (control) or a program of dynamic exercises coupled with video game play. After completion of 16 sessions, it was found that both groups displayed significant improvements in balance performance scores, with consistently higher scores being observed in the video game group in comparison to control. However, no significant differences were observed on the basis of the Timed Up and Go or spatiotemporal gait variables.
