Enhanced rehabilitation guidance after arthroscopic capsulolabral repair of the shoulder: a randomized controlled trial.

Forty-five patients with anterior capsulolabral Bankart lesions who received arthroscopic shoulder surgery were randomized to receive a 12 month home-based shoulder strengthening program beginning 2 months post-operation (n=23) or usual care (n=22) for the improvement of shoulder function and quality of life. Outcomes of interest included the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) score, Short Form 36 (SF-36) quality of life questionnaire, range of motion, muscle strength and pain improvement. Outcomes were assessed upon completion of the 12 month program. Results revealed no significant differences between the two groups in all outcomes (p>0.05 for all). During the last 6 months, only 22% of patients were adequately adhering to the exercise program.
