Effects of acupuncture or similar needling therapy on pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function in individuals with chronic ankle instability: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Complement Ther Med . 2023 Oct:77:102983.Twelve randomized controlled trials including 571 patients with chronic ankle instability were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing acupuncture or similar needling therapy vs. no therapy. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function using various validated scales. The meta-analysis revealed that acupuncture or similar needling therapy resulted in significant improvements in pain, proprioception, balance, and self-reported function compared to controls. These findings suggest that acupuncture or similar needling therapies may be beneficial for improving symptoms and function in individuals with chronic ankle instability.
