Effects and Optimal Dosage Of Traditional Chinese Exercises For Chronic Ankle Instability .
The effects and optimal dosage of traditional Chinese exercises on patients with chronic ankle instability: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Complement Ther Med . 2025 May:89:103145Twelve studies including 323 patients with chronic ankle instability were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing traditional Chinese exercises (e.g., Tai Chi, Ba Duan Jin) versus control interventions. Pooled outcomes of interest included balance (ANT, PM, PL, composite scores), joint position sense (JPS) in multiple directions, muscle strength (plantarflexion, inversion, eversion, dorsiflexion), and functional ankle outcomes using CAIT scores. The meta-analysis showed that traditional Chinese exercises significantly improved CAIT scores, balance in all measured directions, joint position sense, and muscle strength, all with P-values < 0.05. The main finding suggests that traditional Chinese exercise, especially Tai Chi performed twice weekly for 60 minutes over 12 weeks, improves function in CAI patients and could be a valuable rehabilitation approach.
