Effectiveness of Virtual Yoga for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
JAMA Netw Open . 2024 Nov 4;7(11):e2442339.One hundred forty adults with chronic low back pain were randomized to receive either 12 weekly, live-streamed virtual hatha yoga classes (n=71) or were placed on a wait-list control (n=69). The primary outcomes were changes in pain intensity and back-related function (Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire score) at 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes included pain medication use, sleep quality, and sustained outcomes at 24 weeks. Overall, the results revealed that participants in the yoga group experienced significantly greater reductions in pain intensity and disability scores at both 12 and 24 weeks, along with less analgesic use and improved sleep quality. These findings suggest that virtually delivered yoga is a feasible, safe, and effective treatment option for chronic low back pain.
