OE Journal. 2022;10(12):86 Int J Biometeorol . 2022 Apr;66(4):661-668What this means for my practice?
The results of this trial present a favourable outcome in regard to pain reduction and improved function in patients who received kinesio taping or peloid therapy in combination with home exercise for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis. Peloid therapy was slightly more effective than kinesio taping when considering physical health scores. Both of these treatment options are reliable and are offered at a low cost to patients. The results of this trial were limited by an unblinded and single-center design. Future randomized-controlled, trials with longer follow-ups are needed.
Study Summary
One hundred and fifty-six patients diagnosed with chronic lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) were randomized to receive either peloid (mud) therapy + home exercise and cold application (n=48), kinesio taping + home exercise and cold application (n=52), or the control (home exercise and cold application alone) (n=56). The primary outcome of this trial was to determine the efficacy of peloid and kinesio therapies for the treatment of lateral epicondylitis. Outcome measures such as pain and disability using a visual analogue score (VAS), arm, shoulder, and hand disabilities (DASH), were used, respectively. Hand grip strength, quality of life, and arm function were also assessed. At the end of the treatment (1 month), the results favoured peloid therapy in physical health, quality of life, and pain scores.
